Short of buying a 454/350 distributor and trying it, I can't find a resource that compares one to a stock Caddy 429. I believe the biggest concern is the collar to gear height which may be able to be overcome by welding the shaft. I dunno, let me know what you have seen or tried!

I also see a Pontiac 428ci dist. offered everywhere for close to the same $50 price point. The gear looks to turn the opposite direction, but the collar to gear height looks more in line with our block mounted dist.

As opposed to cutting and welding the shaft of the 454, there are bolt on slip collars offered to customize the height for about $35. So total cost of billet shaft hei dist. w/built in 65k volt coil is about $85.

Hmmmm....? Decisions, decisions...

As usual, check my album for the full photos.

I thought it would be best to use the original 429 drive gear, but the roll pin was in a different location. I used wood shims to vice and hold the shaft as I drilled the new hole (further up shaft towards red housing). 13/64 pin hole with 1/4" chamfer. There are other ways to get this all located correctly, but this seemed easiest. The shaft is super soft aluminum so drilling was simple.

Mock up was ok. Still awaiting slip collar arrival before I can do final fitment check. I'll update then. This unit is 3x larger than stock and doesn't look as svelt as the stock unit atop the motor. But, with a relayed direct 12v source should work hotter at .045 gapped plugs.

The MSD 8539 slip collar is too big for the shaft at this placement. It seems like all these dizzy's are clones, so a good % of the market will probably be in the same boat. I used a hose, but you will have to figure something to make the collar stay placed. Also, the base plate of the dizzy just makes contact with the water pipe so the plate will have to be ground and clearanced. Finally, the stock bend in the fuel line will have to be re-bent to clear the base plate.

If you attempt this, make sure you measure-measure-measure! No fancy tools, just accurate-ish measurements. From what I can measure from the top and bottom through the oil filter housing, it all meshes perfectly. Wear pattern on the gear after some miles will be the truest indicator.

It seems that any vac advance is done with an Allen wrench through the vac port, so no more turning the base of the dizzy. The thing won't be running for several more months so final driveability tests will be then!

Have you had the chance to fire up the motor, i'm interested in doing the distributor conversion.

Hi bud! Yes, she purrs like a sewing machine! I also updated my build thread.

Initially my timing was off, so I ground a bit more aluminum off the dizzy base to spin it to 13* retard at idle. I haven’t significantly driven it yet to tune the vac advance though. I also drilled some detents into the dizzy shaft body for the slip collar’s set screws. But, come to find out they sell exact fit slip collars at ACE hardware for about $12.

Still in the bodywork phase:-)

rajeevx7, if you resize your pictures, they will post correct so others can see more than just a corner of your pictures.
