A little back ground leading up to the noise. Got the car out last week for a Sunday Drive and had no power window operation or my aftermarket Viper alarm was not locking or unlocking an no chirp chirp. No big deal I thought, it’s not hot enough to need the windows down, so off we go. Then it happens, we’re about a 1/4 mile from the house and I get a LOUD intermittent grinding sound, at first I thought it sounded like the fan was hitting the shroud but found no visible evidence of that. The noice does not relate with acceleration or deceleration as a matter of fact it did it today parked at idle. Ok so thinking it was the alternator and since I’m running 2 Viair pumps and planning more amps for more tunes in the future it would be a good time for 150amp Powermaster. Yesterday was install day and today turned into a new battery was needed. All set for a Sunday drive, car started no problem, did experience some belt squirrel noise for a minute or so and then the LOAD grinding again, guess it’s not the alternator. The noise sounds to me like a starter grinding the flywheel, but not for sure, however during the grinding noise while the car was running I tried to shut the car off and it didn’t shut off but kept grinding. Not sure why the starter would try and engage while car is running, if the starter is in fact what’s causing the noise. Side note, the water pump in a little over a year old and maybe has 2500 miles on it, so I’m leaning away from that. Appreciate your help on this one. Thanks!

Yikes! Do you have an auto/remote start on the viper?

Is it the ps pump...does steering get heavy during grind?

Sure ur fan isn’t hitting somewhere?

No remote, start on the viper, didn’t notice any lose of power steering, and it also happened while parked. I’ll have to take another look at the fan, but It just sounds to me like the starter gear grinding the flywheel. I’m just perplexed as to why it would grind while running, I could understand if it was making that noise while trying to start it. Guess I could start pulling some belts to isolate the belt driven items.

What if your ignition switch is malfunctioning and powering the starter solonoid? An engaged starter trying to crank a spinning flywheel is a pretty unique sound!
